The ISPCC’s Childline service, along with other child helplines across the globe, is marking the seventh annual International Child Helpline Day and celebrating the vital role of child helplines in listening to and supporting children. In marking this important day, the ISPCC has announced Childline’s annual statistics for 2012. The statistics clearly show the importance of Childline with almost 800,000 calls received in 2012.

Of almost 60,000 teenagers across Ireland who received their Leaving Cert results this week, some will be delighted with the results but others may be disappointed and feeling anxious and fearful about the future.

This year Westlife are helping the ISPCC’s Childline service to launch it’s “Who’s Calling” awareness initiative, the aim of which is to highlight the difficulties with which Ireland’s children are contacting the society. Young people are able to contact the service for a wide range of reasons; 63 per cent of calls from children were about their personal life. This can cover a lot of topics such as school, bereavement, and mental health issues. Childline is accessible to all children and young people throughout Mayo and Ireland. The ISPCC’s staff call to various schools throughout the county making as many as possible aware of the service, and indeed the various means of accessing it.

Childline, the 24 hour freefone active listening service for children and young people, is seeking volunteers.

Childline, who have celebrated 21 years of service to children and young people in Ireland this week, are looking to recruit volunteers for their new Castlebar unit. Volunteers are essential to ensure children are not left without this vital service and your support is needed.

Calls to Childline volunteers in Galway almost doubled in the past year. The charity’s local representatives answered 950 calls per week in 2009 compared to 500 in 2008.
