image preview

IF YOU want something done properly, do it yourself. Sometimes it is the only feasible approach. It certainly was for James Vincent McMorrow as it saved him from artistic frustration and inertia, and helped him create a starling debut album and launch him on a potentially exciting musical journey.

Club championship picture becomes a bit clearer

The make up of the the last eight in the Mayo senior football championships in Mayo started to take shape over the weekend. Castlebar, Crossmolina Deel Rovers, Ballintubber, Ballaghaderreen and Breaffy all registered their second win in the championships. While two wins normally would guarantee you a place in the last eight going on recent years, it may not be enough for Breaffy should they loose out to Knockmore in their final group game.

A Journey of Hope – Barbara Rabbett reports on the Westport/Aror Partnership’s recent trip to Kenya

image preview

Ireland’s economic difficulties paled into insignificance as members of the Westport/Aror (Kenya) Partnership travelled through the Mukuru slum of Nairobi recently. The team from Westport (Michael O’Donnell, Gertie Foley, Margaret Joyce and Barbara Rabbett) were on their way to visit a dispensary, run by the Medical Missionaries of Mary, to see how funds sent from Westport had been put to use by the Sisters. As they made their way slowly through the slum towards the dispensary, they were overwhelmed by the sights and putrid smells of poverty, misery, and filth that surrounded them. It was hard to endure, even for a short time. And yet, these are the living conditions of almost two million people in Nairobi.

Kingdom test next up for Horan’s Mayo

image preview

The Mayo senior footballers will welcome Kerry to McHale Park for their second game in the 2011 National Football League on Sunday. The visit of Jack O’Connor’s side will pose another difficult examination of James Horan’s early tenure in charge of the green and red. Last weekend Horan picked up his first piece of silverware in the Mayo bainisteoir’s bib when they saw off the challenge of John Maughan’s NUIG by 1-14 to 0-11. Horan would have surely preferred a sterner test from the students who failed to fire for long periods of the game as Mayo cruised to victory with ease.

Psychometricity

Now I don’t know about you but I’m sick to the back teeth of all of them blatherin on, on the radio, and the internet about the state of the nation and lack of leadership. We are, allegedly, a democracy although last week the goings on were far from democratic. For years we’ve been electing leaders but in recent times the process aint workin. Hypothetically of course, might it be possible to fit the right person to the right job and in this case the most important and difficult job in the country? Think outside the box (I know, I hate that aul jargon too!). Why not advertise for the job? ‘Taoiseach wanted. Must have copious amounts of common sense. Should possess leadership qualities with a real commitment to learning and personal growth. Must be able to do sums. Preferably be creative. Experience not essential. On the job training will be provided. Salary negotiable for suitable candidate.’
