Former Galway West TD Frank Fahey has been granted a substantial six-figure sum in a settlement with the publishers of the Irish Daily Mail and the Mail On Sunday.

Ring calls on Fine Gael to step back from Lisbon unless there are changes

“The people have spoken,” is Michael Ring’s view on the current discussions about what to do next in relation to the Lisbon Treaty. The Westport-based Fine Gael TD, who is one of the most popular public representatives in the county, is urging his party to distance themselves from the treaty if it is put before the people again. “The people have spoken on the treaty, and if it is put in front of them again without any changes I think we have to step away from it. If there are concessions made and it’s a new document then we can look at it again, but not as it stands.”

ISME calls for public sector wage and recruitment freeze

ISME, the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association, has called on the Government to immediately introduce a pay and recruitment freeze in the public sector in order to control government expenditure, which is already running in excess of budget. The association warned that unless immediate action is taken the cost of running the public sector would result in significant exchequer deficits, with increased borrowings, taxation or both. This scenario would have devastating consequences for an economy which is already on its knees, the association has explained.

Castlebar councillors call for those responsible for economic mess to be indicted for treason

Following a lengthy debate, with plenty of cross table and cross party swipes at policies and abilities, the elected members of Castlebar Town Council voted by eight votes to one to back a motion by Independent Councillor Frank Durcan which said: “The members of Castlebar Town Council call on the Government to indict for the act of treason, the politicians and bankers who were grossly responsible for the undermining of the economy over the past 10 years”.
