The application process for 5,000 Census Enumerators positions across the country has opened this morning. To date 21,000 people have pre-registered their interest in the positions. The final date for applications is 11 January 2011. However the applications process will close prior to this date if the number of applications reaches 15,000.

The people of Westmeath are being encouraged to Make Their Mark on Census 2011 by applying to be a Census enumerator. Some 5,000 enumerators will be required around the country to ensure that Ireland has a successful Census. And 92 Census enumerators will be needed in County Westmeath.

Following the slashing of benefits, increased taxes and cutbacks in budget 2011 this week, at least it’s not all bad news on the homefront as hundreds of job-seekers in Mayo are now being advised they can look forward to 10 week contracts for wages of €2,200 in March 2011 when enumerators are recruited for the next census taking place on Sunday April 10, 2011.

The National Archives of Ireland (NAI) took family historians by surprise this week by completing the online release of the 1911 census one month earlier than anticipated. As a result, census returns for 32 counties, including the long-awaited County Westmeath records, are now available to view free of charge at www.census.nationalarchives.ie.
