Kilkenny’s annual Celtic Festival is kicking off this weekend with a programme that is enticing Celts from all over the world for more reasons than one.

Galway celebrated All Ireland success this week with the intermediate camogie players claiming this year’s honours in Saturday’s replay over Cork at McDonagh Park, Nenagh.

All-Ireland Champions Cork may have dominated the Camogie All-Stars with Gemma O’Connor getting honoured for an unprecedented sixth successive time and five players receiving All Star awards for the first time.

A hungry Athenry camogie side face Cashel of Tipperary in the All Ireland Senior Club Camogie Championship final on Sunday.

As a follow on from the county’s indoor hurling blitzes which have ran for the last number of years, the same type of activity is again being planned for this February by the Westmeath Coaching and Games Committee in conjunction with Cumann na mBunscol Iarmhí. The format will be similar to last year, with schools playing a series of games in a blitz with morning sessions running from 10am to 12pm and new schools involved playing in the afternoon session from 12.30pm – 2.30pm. Each school will play in one blitz with the option of a ‘Finals Day’ for each of the blitz winners. Hurling and camogie competitions will be run separately with Streete Community Hall and AIT again hosting the games.
