Councillor Clodagh Higgins will host a Zoom meeting on Tuesday June 23 from 7pm specifically for Leaving Certificate students to help them plan their future, their CAO choices, and how to make their chosen course work for them.

There has been a rapid shift in students’ lives from “the norm” to one of uncertainty due to the Covid-19 pandemic which is impacting people all over the world. The pandemic has caused increased levels of stress, anxiety, and fear for individuals and communities. Students are experiencing a number of difficulties dealing with the many layers created by Covid-19. While efforts are being taken to contain the spread of Covid-19, which is critical at this point, there are a number of concerns and issues being raised psychologically for people and in particular students. Leaving Cert students are dealing with a disruption to their typical way of learning and a level of uncertainty surrounding achieving their goals and aspirations.

The Covid-19 pandemic has "highlighted the unsustainability" of the State exams "in their current form", and further exposes the "limitations of exams which place so much emphasis on a few weeks at the end of a student’s school life".

The abrupt closure of school last Thursday, which was also the deadline for all backup information for HEAR/DARE applications, left a lot of students and parents stressed and worried. If for any reason you did not manage to complete your HEAR/DARE application, for example your educational impact statement for DARE and financial documents for HEAR, l would urge you to sent in whatever you have to the CAO office now. We have not received any updates in terms of an extension to the deadline, however we are in unprecedented territory and because of this they may look favourably on your late application. All of the online information would have been completed and submitted by March 1.

Galway Community College of Further Education (GCC) will hold its annual open day on Tuesday, March 3, from 9am to 4pm. The college extends a warm invitation to everyone — school leavers, mature students, adults considering returning to education, teachers, and parents — to go along to the open day and explore the exciting and career-focused full-time courses commencing in September.

Galway Community College (GCC) is now taking applications online for all full-time further education courses at Level 5 and 6, commencing in September 2020. Further education, widely known as PLC courses, are full-time programmes for people who have completed their Leaving Certificate or equivalent recently or in the past, and for adults returning to education or hoping to change their career path.

The Central Applications Office normal application deadline closed at 5.15pm on Saturday February 1. A total of 73,035 people applied by this deadline. This figure does not represent the total number of CAO applicants, as a late application facility opens on March 5 and closes on the May 1 at 5.15pm.

The CAO is urging students who have not yet completed their application to do so immediately, particularly mature applicants, applicants for the HEAR or DARE schemes, or those who are thinking about applying for a restricted course.

NUI Galway will hold an information evening next week focusing on the needs of mature students and adult learners who may be considering full-time or part-time studies for the 2020 academic year. The evening will take place on Wednesday, January 15, from 5.30pm to 8.30pm in the Institute for Lifecourse and Society on NUI Galway’s north campus.
