The new secondary league for clubs in Mayo is due to get under way this weekend. The new league, which was introduced after a vote at the county convention, is aimed at keeping club players in action during the national league and championship while the inter-county players are tied up with Mayo teams.

The widening of the bridge at Burrishoole Abbey was recommended by Councillor Frank Chambers in a notice of motion which he discussed at Monday’s Westport area electoral meeting.

Mayo County Walking Officer Anna Connor gave an in-depth presentation to the Planning and Economic Development Strategic Policy Committee of Mayo County Council. After outlining the steps being taken to turn Mayo into the walking capital of Ireland, Director of Services for the council Mr Joe Loftus told the members. “There is a difficult budget ahead which could have some implications for the walking strategy but I’m sure we can get through it.”

The intermediate championship threw in for 2009 last weekend and Tourmakeady are already playing catch up after getting a 10-point trimming at the hands of Kilmaine in south Mayo last weekend.
