The Western Rail Trail campaign — The campaign to utilise the route of the closed railway from Athenry to Sligo as a greenway until such time as a railway might be possible again has welcomed the election results in Sligo, Galway and Mayo.
It is "delusional" to believe the rail line from Athenry to Sligo will ever return according to Tuam area councillor Peter Roche, who made the statement after a public meeting took place in Athenry on Tuesday night to discuss proposals for a greenway.
Extra freight trains are planned between Mayo and Waterford Port each week, bringing the annual total to in excess of 700. The news was broken by rail campaign group West-on-Track, which said the additional trains are for rising volumes of container traffic being shipped by multinationals based in Mayo. A further 730 freight trains currently operate between Mayo and Dublin Port.
