New Survey of Clare Island launched

Brian Hayes, TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works officially launched two volumes of the New Survey of Clare Island at the National Botanic Gardens. The two volumes (Volume 7: Plants and Fungi and Volume 8: Soils and Soil Associations) are published by the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) as part of the New Survey project.

Library exhibition

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth, the 150th anniversary of the publication of the Origin of the Species, and the 100th anniversary of the first Clare Island Survey, Castlebar library is presenting an exhibition featuring exhibits from its rich natural history collections as well as loans from the National Botanic Gardens and the Natural History Museum during the month of February.

It has been a strange gardening year so far. In my garden at least, plants are beginning to flower that have already flowered earlier this year while some spring shrubs are only coming into flower now. I’m not complaining, though, as flowers at any time are welcome. Another thing that is very noticeable this year is the beautiful scents in my garden. Such a variety of perfumes from lilies, buddleias, etc. They really brighten my days.

Warrenstown agri college to close

There is many a farmer in both Carlow and Kilkenny who would have fond memories of learning his trade as a youth at Warrenstown Agricultural College in Co Meath.
