Action-packed weekend for local athletes

The “B” Track and Field Championships, rained off twice during the summer, has just taken place last weekend, in very pleasant conditions on a particularly well marked out track in Thomastown. The sun which remained hidden for much of the summer appeared in full force. Michael O’Keeffe, Thomastown, starter for the afternoon, kept events moving at a steady pace. The result was an action-packed afternoon. Competition was very keen, particularly in the under seven to under twelve age groups. So the curtain has finally come down on track and field. The cross-country season now swings into action. Hopefully the recent spell of good weather will continue at least for the county cross-country championships which take place in October. The first round is in Ballycurran Cross on October 5 and the second round will be in Annamult on 12th Oct.

In an era of romantic chick flicks and frat boy comedies it is not often that you find a film that can be described as heartbreakingly beautiful. Until now. Based on the hugely successful young-adult novel by Dubliner John Boyne, which has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, centres around eight-year-old Bruno, the son of a Nazi commandant who is uprooted from his posh home in Berlin to the bleak countryside on the grounds of Auschwitz. Bored and anxious, the young boy who loves to explore, eventually finds a way to sneak out into the back gardens where he strikes up a forbidden friendship with Schmuel, a young Jewish boy of the same age, who is imprisoned on the other side of an electrical barbed wire fence.
