Connacht cup fourth round action for Mayo sides

It is another hectic weekend of action for a number of Mayo sides on the soccer fields this weekend. Thirteen Mayo teams will be in action across the province in Connacht Junior Cup and Junior Shield action either on Saturday or Sunday. The action gets underway on Saturday evening at 6pm, when Manulla make the trek to Shiven Rovers to take on the 2010 Roscommon and District League champions in what will be a very tough encounter for the Carramore men.

Jack and Jill scholarships for GMIT students

The Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation have officially launched a new scholarship programme for students of GMIT Castlebar Campus which will be funded through the collection of unwanted mobile phones. The new scholarships, valued at €1,000 each, will be awarded to students who have played an active part in fundraising and awareness raising for charities, with these students nominated by staff and students of the Castlebar Campus and the winner selected by an independent panel.

An innovation programme for Mayo, the Higher Certificate in Business in Enterprise Development, has been launched by Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and the Innovation in Business Centre at GMIT Castlebar.

Labour candidate for Castlebar Town Council Dr Bernie Courtney has received notification of her removal from the liaison committee between Mayo VEC and GMIT-Castlebar Campus; a somewhat timely occurrence following the controversy the dental surgeon sparked with her recent remarks about the future of the Castlebar campus of GMIT— in that the campus was to be downgraded — comments which were refuted in a statement issued from GMIT.

Increase in applications at GMIT

The admissions office at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology has received over 600 applications for its new degree programme at the Castlebar campus — the BA in applied social sciences, commencing in September.

Mayo Science and Technology Festival — now in its third year — has organised an innovative night of presentations, discussion, and debate on the types of technology that might be in use in 30 years time and how these will affect our lives and those of our children.
