WhistleBlast Quartet in Ballinrobe Community School

The WhistleBlast Quartet – Ken Edge (saxophones and clarinet), Mary Curran (French horn), Síle Daly (oboe and cor anglais) and Andrew Synnott (piano) – return for the new school year with another series of three-day outreach/recital programmes in Mayo. The quartet has been successful in applying for a Arts Council Travel and Training grant to bring internationally acclaimed music facilitator Tim Steiner to Mayo to work with the quartet in providing secondary school and youth in-training. Tim Steiner will also be joining the quartet for its first programme of the school year with the pupils of Ballinrobe Community School.

On Sunday April 15 a pampering day will take place in Ballinrobe Community School in order to raise money for volunteers travelling to the Philippines.

League start date put off a week

The Mayo league announced last week that it has put back the start date of this year’s Mayo League due to “circumstances beyond our control”. A statement issued by the league last weekend said: “Due to circumstances beyond our control the Mayo Football League have decided to delay the start of the 2012 season by one week, therefore the opening match of our 2012 season will take place on Saturday, April 7, in Milebush Park with the Charity Shield.

Mayo secondary schools to receive high speed broadband — Minister Ring

Twenty five secondary schools in Mayo are to get high speed (100Mbps) broadband over the next few years as part of a national programme being rolled out in all secondary schools. In these dark cold days of winter it is good to be able to look forward to a cracking spectacle of music, fun, and dance. The transition year students of Ballinrobe Community School are providing the opportunity to forget about the doom and gloom with their sparkling production of Footloose. They will put on two performances this weekend, tonight Friday December 16 at 8pm and tomorrow Saturday December 17 at 8.30pm in the school hall.

The second of the Mayo semi-finals for the Special Olympics Our School's Got Talent, in association with Supermac’s, took place this week in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, where 20 acts took to the stage, all hoping to clinch a place in this year's Mayo county final.

Ballinrobe Musical Society keeps pushing boundaries

Friday September 30 sees the Ballinrobe Musical Society in association with Mid West Radio take to the stage at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, for one night only to present Anthems - a collection of some of the most famous musical numbers of all time. Some familiar faces such as Seán Costello, Sandra Schalks, Michael Coen, and Daithí Ryder will be accompanied onstage by a chorus of 100 past and present members of the society. Together they will be presenting key songs from shows such as Ragtime: The Musical, Titanic, The Pirate Queen, and Les Misérables. Now, for the first time ever, the society will present highlights from these epic productions together with many more in a concert performance. Tickets are on sale now for €20 and include entrance to the after party in the Royal Theatre.

Hundreds to converge on Ballinrobe for national talent competition
