Decare Claremorris five mile race and walk

Plans are well advanced for the ninth annual Decare Dental Claremorris five mile run and walk which takes place on Saturday June 26 at 6pm. The event is the second race in the Mayo AC C&C Cellular league which will ensure that the leading west of Ireland runners will be participating. ‘This will tell us a lot about ourselves’ — Togher

Ballina Town are sitting pretty top of the Super League with four wins out of four, but chasing their tales in second place in the league are Iorras Aontaithe who have won their opening three fixtures. But this weekend’s challenge for Iorras will tell them far more about themselves than their three fixtures so far according to their manager Michael S Togher. “Yeah we’ve done well so far in the league, but going to Manulla will be a big test for us and really tell us a lot about ourselves for the season ahead.”

Mayo jobs to be affected by First Active closure

Two Mayo First Active branches, in Ballina and Castlebar, are to be closed following the announcement this week that First Active and Ulster Bank are to merge. It is expected that up to 12 staff from the two branches will be redeployed to work in local Ulster Bank branches. There are six Ulster Banks in Mayo; in Castlebar, Ballina, Westport, Ballinrobe, Claremorris, and Ballyhaunis, but staff won’t know where they will be reassigned until a voluntary redundancy scheme has been completed.

Five Mayo seafood establishments awarded BIM membership

A total of five Mayo based seafood establishments were recently awarded membership of the highly regarded Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), the Irish Sea Fisheries Board Seafood Circle programme. BIM’s Seafood Circle recognises and awards hospitality and retail businesses that consistently deliver the highest standards of seafood and service across the three membership categories of hospitality, seafood specialist, and supermarket seafood counter. The programme aims to assist the retail and food service sectors to achieve excellent standards in the provision of seafood and encourage the use of locally sourced, sustainably fished, quality seafood. The success and growing recognition of the programme is clear from the continued growth in membership nationwide. BIM awarded 23 new members in 2009 bringing the total number of restaurants, pubs, and seafood retailers awarded membership to 155.

Irish summer camps

Togra Mhaigh Eo de Chonradh na Gaeilge Castlebar is organising Irish summer camps, which will take place over a week in July, which are funded by Forás na Gaeilge, in Castlebar, Westport, Claremorris, and Ballina.

Altered Images exhibition at Ballina Arts Centre

Throughout September, Ballina Arts Centre will host Altered Images, an exhibition of works from the collections of South Tipperary County Council, Mayo County Council and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition included works by: Thomas Brezing, David Creedon, Alice Maher, Caroline McCarthy, and Abigail O’Brien, as well as specially commissioned works by Amanda Coogan and Daphne Wright.

Culture night at Ballina Arts Centre

Since its launch in 2006, Culture Night has grown from being a Dublin-only phenomenon to expanding this year across the country. On Friday September 25, arts and cultural organisations will throw their doors open beyond normal closing hours, and welcome visitors of all ages for a taste of free culture for one night. Ballina Arts Centre will be open until 10.30pm that night and is presenting a programme of events and activities aimed at all ages, with something for all tastes. Culture Night is an initiative co-ordinated by Temple Bar Cultural Trust and supported by the Department of Arts, Sport, and Tourism in partnership with Mayo County Council and participating venues.
