Amibitions to develop facilities in Ballina to make the town a major running, walking and cycling destination, similar to west Mayo’s Greenway, got a boost yesterday (Thursday).

Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has welcomed the news that the playground at Tom Ruane Park in Ballina is to re-developed as part of a €200,000 investment in the recreational amenity. Deputy Mulherin said a new play area with landscaped mounds and paths is expected to be completed by next spring. The Tom Ruane Park playground is a popular and much-loved recreational area and open space enjoyed by families and visitors to Ballina, who make great use of the park's many impressive facilities.

At a well attended meeting of Ballina branch of Fine Gael held this week the branch nominated Councillor Mark Winters to go forward to convention for selection of candidates, in the newly extended Ballina electoral area, in the forthcoming Mayo County Council elections.

Ballina is moving closer to following the lead of the likes of Ennis and areas in Dublin city centre in attaining a purple flag award, which is an international award that recognises the excellence in managing town centres with a focus on the night-time economy. Moy Valley Resources has won a tender competition for a three month contract valued at €10,000 (including VAT) to prepare a marketing and promotions plan for Ballina. The members of Ballina Town Council were informed of the news at the October monthly meeting of the authority this week, by town manager Paddy Mahon.
