Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has welcomed the decision by the HSE to open step-down beds at Ballina District Hospital in order to alleviate the chronic trolley problem at Mayo General, mainly caused by delayed discharges.

Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin is calling on the Minister for Health James Reilly to intervene in what she has called the “serious ongoing trolley problem at Mayo General Hospital” by funding the opening of 12 step-down beds in Ballina District Hospital.

Ballina District Hospital with the support of Mayo/Roscommon Hospice and the HSE is to benefit from the development of a two-bed hospice suite.

Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin is to request the Minister for Health make funding available to re-open 12 beds in Ballina District Hospital in order relieve pressure on acute services at Mayo General which, she said, has seen an eight per cent increase in people presenting to the hospital in recent months, ‘along with a marked increase in the number of patients on trolleys which had been brought well below the national average in the previous 18 months’.

The 12 beds at Ballina District Hospital that were threatened with closure will now remain open after the HSE released the funds to ensure their continued operation.

Industrial action is scheduled to take place at Mayo General Hospital on Monday next (subject to ongoing negotiations) while a protest march is being organised for Sunday February 5 next in Ballina, in response to drastic new health service cuts set to affect hospitals in Mayo, as announced as part of the new HSE National Service Plan this week.

It is totally unacceptable that the HSE is proposing cuts to services for older people in County Mayo at a time when more than €61 million is owed to the HSE West by private health insurance companies.

Community nursing homes in the county could face closure if the warnings given by the Minister for Health Dr James Reilly come to fruition. Dr Reilly remarked earlier this week at a Fine Gael and Labour parliamentary party that cuts in the forthcoming budget could results in the closure of 40 nursing homes, the closing of 1,000 hospital beds, and the hotly debated issue of a €50 medical card charge.

Private patient records which were found in a bin in a Ballina housing estate in August were not shredded as they should have been according to policy set down by the HSE.
