NEXT WEEKEND sees the latest instalment of Music For Galway’s annual midwinter festival. This year’s offering is entitled Intimate Voices and offers a varied musical programme, ranging from the 17th to the 21st century, as well as a unique combination of artistry involving voice, dance, literature, drama, and visual art, as well as two internationally renowned quartets.
EIGHT GIFTED Galway dance students, members of Corrib Dance Academy and Youth Ballet West, have recently secured placements on elite courses at prestigious schools in the UK and mainland Europe. The eight dancers are Stephanie Dufresne, Mary Walsh, Elspeth McKeever, Rebecca Lee, Caitlin Langan, Jessica Nolan, Brigitte O’Reilly and Gemma Brook. To have so many dancers from the region progressing to these blue-chip establishments is a truly remarkable achievement, as Youth Ballet West director Judith Sibley explains; “Normally each year there would be four young dancers from all of Ireland going away to these top vocational colleges, so to have eight going from Galway city is phenomenal. And these are hugely competitive courses, one school I spoke to had 4,000 people apply for just 25 places.”
LITTLE RED Riding Hood, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Goldilocks will all come to life on the stage when Youth Ballet West perform at the Town Hall Theatre next week.
EXERTS FROM the much loved ballet, the Nutcracker Suite, will be performed by Youth Ballet West as part of its new production in the Town Hall Theatre.
Youth Ballet West will perform at the junction between Shop Street and William Street (in front of Evergreen) on Monday August 10 from 2pm to raise funds to continue its work. Earlier this year, YBW swept the boards at The National Dance Awards, Longford, taking first place in Classical Ballet in every age group.
