Triathlon dreams for young Westport athlete

Most young athletes who want to improve their form tend to concentrate on one particular sport but up-and-coming Westport star Con Doherty prefers to work on the three disciplines of running, cycling, and swimming in his bid to become a professional triathlete. Having effortlessly come first in the swimming section of the inaugural Westport triathlon recently, and featuring as a winner in the first round of the Irish National League in cycling in March, he is already well on his way to achieving his dream.

Another league campaign over. Another relegation confirmed. Division one in 2009 to division three in 2011. The Irish housing market hasn’t slid as quickly or as far as the fortunes of our county footballers. It is now 14 league outings in a row without a win. Kilkenny are the only other team in the entire league not to have collected any points. A dismal points difference of -52 to boot.

Joanne Cuddihy continued her return to form with gold and silver performances down under. Competing in the New Zealand track and field championships in Christchurch at the weekend she took first place in the 400m and second in the 200m. Her times were 52.84 and 24.02 respectively.

Galway youngsters shine

Galway athletes enjoyed a successful day at the Irish Juvenile Indoor Athletic Championships in Nenagh Stadium at the weekend, bagging a medal haul of three gold, seven silver and two bronze medals.
