Team title for Ballina AC men’s team in Hollymount International Road Races

The Hollymount international road races took place last Sunday under the stewardship of Seán Reilly. There is always a high quality field in this race run over a course which encompasses three demanding laps to make the 10K distance in the men's race. The women's race is over 3K and was dominated by Mary Gleeson and her Mayo AC team mates. Ballina AC athletes Michelle Reynolds and her sister Ann Egan put in solid performances. They are used to much longer events but added the snappy 3K event to their repertoire.

Kilkenny man wins at blind sports tenpin bowling competition in England

Kilkenny man Martin Gahan was part of the winning team of three blind and visually impaired tenpin bowlers who represented Irish Blind Sports at the recent bowling tournament in Hampshire, England.

Westmeath clubs in line for Texaco Sportstars Bursaries

Thirteen sports clubs from Westmeath are among a record 923 applicants from across the 32 counties to put their names forward for the 2010 Texaco Sportstars Bursaries. A previous Westmeath winner was Shoot ‘N’ Stars Special Olympics, Mullingar who won an award in 2008, which they used for improving the facilities for their club members.

This year’s Elverys Sports Galway Bay Half Marathon is expected to attract more than 1,000 runners. The event will take place on Saturday October 2 in Salthill.

The St Joseph’s club were well represented in the national multi—events Championships held in Tullamore at the weekend. Athletes from the club took part in seven of the events and while amassing high scores in most they claimed medals in four – one gold, two silver and one bronze. In the under 14 pentathlon Paul Manning scored 2,345 points to win the silver medal.

Saturday, Day three of the All-Ireland Juvenile Track and Field Championships, had a successful outcome for a number of Kilkenny athletes. It had special significance for Sophie Parkinson, Gowran, and Paul Manning, St Joseph’s. Both athletes collected their second gold medal of the championships.

Fifty years of soccer in Mervue

In the mid fifties, the corporation began to build the houses that make up what we now know as Old Mervue. Many young families moved to the area, and for the children, the open green areas in from Plunkett Avenue, and between Clarke and McDonagh avenues, became their playgrounds. They played all kinds of games here… Gaelic football, athletics, and especially soccer. It was on these green spaces that many well-known footballers first developed and honed their skills.
