Mayo AC celebrated 25th birthday in style

Mayo AC celebrated their 25th Anniversary in style at a party night in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar at the start of the month. A broad spectrum of members from the early days of the late '80s to the present time were among those enjoying the celebrations. It was a wonderful opportunity for old friends and rivals to meet again, run down memory lane, mix with the post millennium intake, and share training methods from the days of hand-written results sheets to today's racing menu where it's chips with everything. In tandem with the club's success, membership has grown from 30 odd in 1999 to over 140 in 2012.

Doherty claims Ballyhaunis 8k

There was a blustery breeze around the 8k course as more than 100 runners lined up at the start outside Caulfield's shop in Ballyhaunis on Saturday afternoon for the fifth annual 8k run west race. It was also the seventh race in 2012 Mayo AC C&C Cellular Road League. The road was dry as they raced down main street and turned out Clare road. The pace dropped for many as they came on a tough hill section as they approached Gorteen after the 4k mark . By then Con Doherty (Westport) who led out from the start had a few seconds lead over Matt Bidwell (GCH).

Mayo Sports Partnership and Claremorris AC prepare future Olympians

Right now the Olympics is a hot topic. There are lots of experts and analysts commenting on how our Irish athletes have performed in London 2012. The question is being asked as to what we as a nation could or should have done to improve the standard or quality of the athletes being sent to the Olympics every four years. Politicians such as Senator Eamon Coughlan have proposed that a programme should be rolled out in schools to introduce children to athletics and Minister of State for Sport and Tourism Michael Ring has emphasised the need for more money to be invested in our athletes in the future.
