It is hard to believe that another year has flown by so quickly. This is the time of year for most sports people to indulge a little, give the body a rest and reflect on the year gone by. There will be a few of you who will look back on the past year and recall magic moments experienced It might have been a new personal best in an athletics event, a provincial or All-Ireland medal won or even a part played in the defeat of rival competitors. Some of you might have underachieved and are feeling a little guilty. Others will reflect and feel that, with a bit more effort, greatness could have come their way. Whatever way you look at it you cannot turn the clock back now and there is no point in killing yourself with guilt at this stage. Anyway, 2009 is but a pup away and you will, once again, get an opportunity to take on new challenges for the year ahead. With a brand new attitude, the promise of abstention from the cursed drink, and sheer hard work, you will begin to feel good about yourself again, maybe even as early as the end of January.

A warm welcome awaits in Swinford for all who make the trip for the fourth race in the 2008 Mayo AC Road Race series. Swinford AC host the Swinford 8km Road Race on Sunday, August 3 at 5pm and it promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Swinford AC are one of the most progressive, ambitious and successful juvenile athletics clubs in the west and undoubtedly this race will be run with the same level of enthusiasm and efficiency as all their club activities to date.

There was a good atmosphere on the streets of Swinford on Sunday for the annual road race. Swinford AC organised the fourth race in the 2008 Mayo Road Race League and provided a warm welcome for the participants in the 8k and the children's race which preceded it. Joe McNulty and his team of enthusiastic supporters in this young and successful club made sure the event was a huge success. The streets in the start and finish areas were cordoned off and traffic free, which enhanced the safety and enjoyment of all. This race has gained in popularity and stature and is now a key event in the Western athletics calendar. The main race had over 130 runners from 20-plus athletics clubs.

The Mayo Sports Partnership would like to invite everybody in the Erris area to participate in a festival of sport which takes place on the weekend of Friday and Saturday October 3 and 4.

It was Sigerson Cup last weekend so senior inter-county football teams had an opportunity to regroup and conduct a ‘where are we now’ review of their opening two games of the National Football League. In Mayo’s case the review might have involved the use of a ‘head doctor’ in order to establish how the team can mix the brilliance of the extraordinary second half comeback against Donegal, with the ordinariness of their performance in the first half.

The Home Countries International Masters Cross Country races take place this year at Singleton Park, Swansea in South Wales on Saturday November 15. Following the Irish Masters team trials, which were incorporated in the Gerry Farnan five mile XC at the Phoenix Park last week,two Mayo AC athletes have been selected on the Irish team. They are Ronnie Naylor from Ballina and Carracastle's Tom Hunt. Both of them were part of Mayo AC's gold medal winning Masters team in the National Half Marathon Championships in Waterford last month, and were also individual medallists, Ronnie winning silver in the O50 category, while Tom won bronze O60.

Eighty students at NUIG will receive funding to pursue their sporting interest this year.

The Shoot ‘n’ Stars Special Olympics club in Gaybrook, Mullingar has been awarded a Texaco Sportstars Bursary of €5,000.

One of Mayo’s top young athletes is in with a chance of walking away with an award at next weekend’s Athletics Ireland National Athletics Awards. Pamela Hughes from Westport AC is nominated following her impressive performances this season. The second annual National Athletics Awards, which are in association with Waterford Crystal, will honour the best Irish athletes, clubs and coaches from across the country.

The Labour Party in Mayo are celebrating the passing of an amendment in Seanad Éireann which ensures that sports clubs are listed as charities in the Charities Bill.
