The reigning county champions Garrycastle suffered their first defeat of this year’s campaign against an impressive Mullingar Shamrocks. Anthony Cunningham’s men were without a number of regulars including the two Dolans and James Duignan and struggled against a very mobile and well organised Shamrocks outfit. The Mullingar men were still without Kieran Gavin but were able to call on the services of Anthony Clinton in midfield. Kieran Gavin will be back for their semi-final in a month’s time and they must stand a great chance of making the county final.

For anybody with primrose and blue blood running through their veins, all roads lead to Croke Park this Sunday as Fergal O’Donnell’s men bid to upset the odds when they face Cork in the All-Ireland quarter-final.

Westmeath’s All-Ireland campaign came to a premature end on Saturday evening at the hands of Meath in a wet and windswept Cusack Park, on a scoreline of 1-15 to 1-5.

Last weekend’s action on the playing fields means that the football championships on either side of the Shannon have reached the quarter-final stages. While a lot of football has yet to be played before any silverware is handed out, things have become a lot clearer, now that we have reached the knock-out stage.

Kilkenny provide the opposition in a game fixed for Nolan Park at 2.30pm. Even allowing for the fact that Westmeath will be forced to line out without a host of regulars due to college commitments, it’s inconceivable to think they could slip up against lowly Kilkenny.

What an intriguing county final pairing this year’s Westmeath senior championship has thrown up. And what a final lies in store. In the green and red corner we have a Garrycastle outfit hungry to make amends for last year’s county final defeat to Castledaly. In the blue corner are the underdogs, St Loman’s, making their first county final appearance in 41 years. Indeed it was 1963 when the Saints won their third and last county senior title. Aside from the medals on offer, neither set of players will be lacking in motivation to play the game of their lives when the ball is throw in at 3.30pm.

It’s a big weekend for the footballers of Garrycastle as they travel to Pearse Park, Longford on Sunday to contest the quarter-final of the Leinster club championship. Longford champions Clonguish, backboned by the Barden brothers, provide the opposition.
