Conditions were good for the third Annual Kilmovee 10k on Saturday afternoon. There was a record turnout of runners and walkers, with 406 finishers.
Matt Bidwell and Mary Gleeson further underlined their status as leading runners in this year's Mayo AC Road League on Saturday in Claremorris. It was the 10th running of the De Care Dental sponsored 'Sport a Smile' five mile event and brought a fun atmosphere to the town centre with puppet shows, face painting, music etc. It also served as a focus for Mayo Cancer Support through participants and street collections.

Some said it was very hot, but nobody among the record turnout of runners and walkers — 335 finishers — was really complaining. There were entries from 16 counties also. This year the event was the first race in the 2011 Mayo AC C&C Cellular
There will be a very strong Mayo AC representation at the national 10k championships this weekend. The Mayo AC senior men’s team will be made up of TJ McHugh .Anthony Devanney, Timmy Glavey, Brendan Hession, Dave Huane, Andrew Lynskey, and Kevin Mellett. The senior ladies’ team is Catherine Conway, Mary Gleeson, Paula Prendergast, Sarah Syron, and Colette Tuohy. Christy O’Malley will be competing in the men’s over 40, with Billy Gallagher, Tom Hunt, Owen Mongan, Ronnie Naylor, Michael McGrath and John Timothy in the over 50s section. The women’s over 40s team will consist of Chris Gallagher, Anne Murray and Angela O'Connor. Mary Naylor and Una McGrath will be competing for Mayo AC in the over 50s women’s event.
It began with the Carramore 10k in May and will reach its exciting conclusion with the Westport 5k on Sunday December 12 it is the Mayo AC, C&C Cellular league which once again proved an outstanding success this year. This is the 12th year that this popular race series has been held and the fifth time to be supported by the C&C Cellular Group. Over the years many runners have been discovered through the league races with many going on to achieve national success since. While some of the league prizewinners are already known there is still a lot of running to be done in Westport before the prizes are paid out at the post race presentation in Hotel Westport.
The Mayo AC ladies team have been rewarded for their good performances this year by being selected to take part in the 24th European road race inter club championships in Torres Vedras, Portugal. The event, which will take place on Sunday October 17 over a 15km course, will have top athletic clubs from all over the continent taking part. The Mayo AC team which will compete in the event will be finalised over the coming weeks.
It has just been announced that the Mayo AC Ladies team has been nominated by AAI to represent Ireland in the European Women’s Road Race Inter Clubs Championship in Torre Vedras, Portugal, on Sunday October 17 next. Mayo AC have established themselves as one of the leading ladies’ club teams nationally in recent years, with many successes including winning team gold at the 2009 National Half Marathon at both senior and masters’ level. This will be the third time that Mayo AC will be taking part in this major event, having travelled to Italy in 2002 and to Moscow in 2003.
This Sunday, August 22, Westport will host a 5k fun run and walk around the historic tourist town. The event is open to absolutely everyone of all abilities and will take place through the grounds of Westport House. The event starts at 4.30pm sharp at the North Mall, with registration taking place from 3.30pm in the same location. The course has been accurately measured, and is the ideal distance for families, walkers, Fit4Life members, and club runners. As part of the Westport Get Out There Adventure Festival, the Westport community, and Mayo Sports Partnership have come together to promote an Active Westport for all. It is all systems go for the Balla 10k which takes place this Saturday 24 at 7pm.
