It was a poor weekend for Galway rugby clubs with all three recording losses in the AIB League.

Wegians see off Buccs in local derby

image preview

David Clarke’s fine drop goal in the heavy fog at Crowley Park saw Galwegians secure a narrow 12-11 victory over their Connacht rivals Buccaneers on Saturday. Most games between Connacht’s leading two sides are keenly contested, but there will hardly be a closer affair with a more dramatic finish than this encounter. And although the quality was not always top drawer at times in a game littered with mistakes, it was a tense nail-biting affair which had both sets of supporters living on their nerves right up to the very last second. This match was preceded by a minute’s silence to mark the recent passing of the late Bobby Deacy, Galwegians’ trustee and ex-president of the IRFU. The game itself was played in dense fog, which made visibility difficult for both teams, but it was the visitors who started much the brighter.

RUGBY SHORTS

•Corinthians claimed the scalp of city rivals Galwegians by 15 - 0 in the battle for a play-off place in AIL u-20 division one league. In appalling conditions, both sides served up an enthralling contest which saw Corinthians move up into joint third place in a league currently led by fellow Connacht outfit Buccaneers. Unsurprisingly, it became a battle up front, and Corinthians, with the wind, dominated territory for the first half. Prop Fiachra Tierney was unlucky when stopped just short due to the excellent Wegians pack, led by Greg Leader. Scoreless at the break, Galwegians looked the more likely to win, but Corinthians played outstanding rugby to dominate the second half and score three tries. Johnny Kearney touched down for the first try. When Shane Conneely broke on the blind, he fed Kevin Russell who dived over in the corner. Galwegians fought back, but with time running out scrumhalf Peter Walsh sold an outrageous dummy from broken play to score the third. Corinthians now meet Cork Constitution in Temple Hill on Saturday.
