A young woman awoke from her nap and told her husband: “I just had a dream you bought me a pair of Louboutin shoes, I wonder what that means?” Her husband replied: “You’ll know tonight.” That night he came home and handed her a beautifully gift wrapped package, and inside was a book entitled The Meaning of Dreams.
The week before last I had the great pleasure of viewing the launch of Brown Thomas’ spring summer 2012 collections in Dublin. Shelly Corkery, head of fashion direction, talked us through what looks like one of the most exciting seasons to come along in a while.
The catwalk likes to tease us. Yes, tease us and our wallets. But there is something to be said about an investment in designer clothing every once in a while, that is why they invented piggy banks! Eye spy with my stylish eye, I see a bag by Tom Ford that has my name written all over it. So I am putting away a little of my earnings every month until there comes a time when I can rejoice in buying the bag that I will have forever. And it’ll probably form part of my children’s inheritance. Designer clobber is at the upper end of the price scale; but it can command a higher price for several reasons which we, as consumers, don’t always understand. The design, the labour intensive craftsmanship, the highest quality fabrics and finishings all contribute to the final piece that we see the likes of Karly Kloss or Jordan Dunn strut down the catwalk each season. So why not explore what they have to offer? For inspiration, if nothing else.
A little bit of luxury…
Our European counterparts, such as France and Italy in particular, have been long standing pioneers of design. So much so both Paris and Milan have been the launch pad for many a great name including Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Tom Ford. However, as of late, our own shores have produced some of the best talent in the world of fashion who can more than compete with some of the more internationally known designers. Look at how well the likes of Paul Costello, John Rocha, Joanne Hynes and Orla Kiely have been internationally; with role models like these to look to, new Irish designers have the fashion world at their sewing machines.
The art of giving is all wrapped up at Brown Thomas Galway this Christmas with the arrival of the Gift Box.
This is the very best time of the year in Galway, and in the run up to the Galway Races Brown Thomas will become a world of designer delights with special pop-up accessory collections in store. Some of the exciting labels to look forward to are Alexander McQueen clutches, Stella McCartney's fallabella bag, and clutches from Anya Hyndmarch. The YSL Belle De jour evening clutch is to die for. You could have a love affair with this bag. And it would not end in heartbreak.
Just in at Brown Thomas is Irish label Laundry Room. Located on the second fashion floor, this range includes affordable, wearable, vintage inspired dresses and tops for mothers and daughters (each wearing it her own way of course). It even has a bang on trend three quarter length sleeve trench in the perfect nude colour. My favourite piece in this collection is a drapey nude sleeveless ‘going out’ top, the shape and colour would work well with most wardrobes and on most girls.
