Alan Mulholland’s Galway footballers and Sligo, under Kevin Walsh, will face each other in the FBD League on Sunday in Enniscrone (2pm).

The Galway senior footballers will have their second competitive game of the season this Sunday when they face Sligo IT in round two of the FBD league in Tuam Stadium (2pm).

1. Galway hurlers to win All-Ireland title

Now that the dust has finally settled, I spent some time discussing the quality of the senior football championship this year with a few GAA heads. Overall it was generally felt that it was a reasonably good championship as there were several good games that were of high quality. Obviously Mayo’s victory over Dublin is a stand out match for me, and I’m sure several of you too. But you would also have to admit that Donegal’s victories over both Kerry and Cork, when they produced their two best performances, were really eye-catching. Donegal were the best team in the country all year and deserved their All-Ireland success.

There is a lot of genuine disappointment in Galway football circles this week after last Saturday’s one point defeat to Antrim who played their football in Division Three of the NFL last season, and whose last Ulster senior title was in 1951 and whose last Ulster minor title came thirty years ago in 1982.

One of the scary aspects about last weekend’s one point (0-11 to 0-10) defeat to Antrim in Casement Park was that so few football people in the county were genuinely surprised by the loss.

The Galway footballers and their hardy band of loyal supporters face the arduous journey to Casement Park to take on Antrim this Saturday (3pm) in round two of the All Ireland qualifiers.

I noticed in a post match interview that Sligo’s wing back, Charlie Harrison is credited with saying that they (Sligo) had no doubt whatsoever that they were going to win last weekends game in Salthill. I didn’t believe they would. In fact few did. I did, however, chat in the press room prior to the game with a few former Sligo players and they really did believe they were in with a great chance of pulling off a coup! It was quite remarkable because after the opening 20 minutes Galway were so much in control all over the field that I had a feeling then that they would stroll into a Connacht final largely untested after two games. Ha, how foolish of me! I completely underestimated the mindset of Charlie Harrison and the rest of his team mates. And consequently I had greatly overestimated the mindset of the Galway team after their first round victory over Roscommon.

Whatever exuberance and confidence that was was starting to bubble within Galway football supporters’ hearts after the facile win over a poor Roscommon team, was mercilessly wiped out last Saturday evening. Sligo won a senior championship tie for the first time at a Galway venue, comprehensively outscoring Galway by 2-14 to 0-15.
