The Galway People of the Year Awards marked a significant milestone at the weekend, celebrating their 30th anniversary with a gala banquet that drew more than 550 family members, friends, and supporters to the Galway Bay Hotel.

Among a cohort of national journalists, many of whom tend to drift in and out of the camogie scene, there was a usual air of passing interest.

The Tribeswomen have not been in action since late June, when they overcame Waterford in a top of the table clash in Kenny Park. That win booked their passage straight through into the semi-finals.

Niamh Mallon and Aoife Donohue opened the scoring for Galway in the opening three minutes. Orlaith Hull, Derry’s only scorer of the first half replied with Derry’s opening score a minute later.
