Lidl to open third store in Kilkenny

In the wake of recent comments from Green Party Councillor Malcolm Noonan regarding his concerns about aggressive pricing in discount supermarkets, Lidl have opened the doors of their third store in Kilkenny.

Residents of the eastern environs are being provided with another shopping option for groceries and homeware with the opening of Lidl on the Johnswell Road yesterday with the other two stores located on the Waterford road and Thomastown.

The store was officially opened by Mayor of Kilkenny, Cllr Martin Brett and its understood the new Lidl will create 20 jobs in the area.

Meanwhile at this week’s county council meeting Cllr Noonan said “large discount stores are causing devastation to smaller grocery stores in Kilkenny, but the worry is the cost of alcohol. The suicide rate amongst young men is constantly on the rise and with low cost alcohol on sale in these stores, we are seeing large scale buying and selling of alcohol. I really think we need to revisit the groceries order as aggressive pricing is causing devastation,” he said.

However, it’s all celebrations at the store this weekend as customers have the chance to win €50 in Lidl vouchers on the Lidl Wheel of Fortune.

On Saturday a Happy Family Day will take place with free family fun activities for all ages. Children will be amused by a treasure hunt, bouncy castle, and face painters between the hours of 11am and 6pm. On Friday and Sunday delicious doughnuts and hot dogs will be available on each day respectively.

“I am really looking forward to welcoming all of the Kilkenny locals to our new store,” Paul Webster, store manager for the new Kilkenny store, said at the announcement of the opening. “Lidl is delighted to be opening another store in the county, especially in our 10th year in Ireland. We have so many exciting activities planned for the opening, there really is something for everyone and it promises to be a great local event for all the families and anyone else who wants to come along and join the fun.”

Opening times are Monday to Saturday: 08am - 9pm and Sunday: 10.30 to 7pm.
