Back in 2007 Johnny Oosten came up with an idea. This idea centred primarily around creating awareness and raising vital funds for children with autism in Ireland by means of the Croagh Patrick Seven Day in a Row Challenge. Five years on he has certainly achieved that, having raised more than half a million euro (€534,000) for the cause. (www.croaghpatrickchallenge.com)
March 18 this year will be the date for his next venture - a completely new challenge and a new cause. This new event is a fundraiser to help the Cystic Fibrosis West team raise the much-needed funds required to build a specialised day care unit at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar. Last Friday evening Michelle Chambers from Castlebar Boxing Club claimed the 54kg national intermediate title after a nail biting bout with Rosmary Doherty from Carndonagh Boxing Club in Donegal. Chambers got off to a great start with some great overhand rights to Doherty's head, and led at the end of the first round, 5-2. Chambers, now on the back foot, was feeling the pressure, the third round started the same way the second ended with Doherty in the ascendancy.
