Grand final looming for qualifiers in Castlebar winter league

Matt Leonard was the winner of the weekend stableford competition in the club last weekend with a score of 38pts. His play on the back nine was enough to keep him in front of PJ Brett in second place with John Parsons taking third on 34pts. The ladies’ competition was won by Breda Cleary with a score of 36pts, it was only her back six scoring that held off Aine McDonald in second, with Breege Jennings taking third with 33pts. The winter league is still in full swing with Catherine McNulty and Martin Moylette in the lead on 391pts. They are being chased in second place by Paraic Cuffe and Breege Moran on 369pts.

Kayak and Sailing Intervarsities took over Mayo

Last weekend GMIT Kayak and Canoe Club, Castlebar, made history by hosting the 2012 Kayaking Intervarsities for the first time. Eighteen colleges attended, and approximately 500 students from all over the country made their way to Castlebar with trailers packed full of colourful boats.

Is your club the brainiest soccer club in Mayo?

This Monday, February 27, in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar, at 8.30pm soccer clubs in Mayo will test their knowledge of all things football to see which team will be given the crown as Brainiest Club in Mayo.

In an effort to raise much needed funds for the Irish Hospice Foundation, clubs are invited to sent teams of four (club members) to compete against their on-field rivals in an all football table quiz. Each club is allowed to send a maximum of two teams, made up of four club members each. Each team costs €50 to enter. All money raised on the night will go directly to the Irish Hospice Foundation. There will be 100 questions on the night encompassing the League of Ireland, English league football, the World Cup, European football, and some novelty questions thrown in for good measure. The winners on the night will be presented with a Mayo Crystal trophy for the Brainiest Club in Mayo. They will also receive a keg of Bulmers for their local pub, with lots of other prizes up for grabs on the night. Each club is asked to send at least one team and members are asked to confirm their participation in advance to John Carty by email at [email protected] or by phone to 085 8345606.

Hurlers look to hit back against Roscommon

The last time that both these sides met was in the blistering sunshine in Carrick on Shannon in the National Hurling League Division 3B final last April. But despite blitzing their way though the league stages of the competition where they beat Roscommon in Tooreen on the first day of the league Mayo came up short in the final by two points.

In last weekend’s competition PJ Brett was the winner of the gents’ section with a score of 39pts, he finished in front of Frank Larkin in second and John Walsh in third. The ladies’ event was claimed by Breege Moran on 35pts, with Catherine McNulty in second place and Aine McDonald in third.

Ernie Deacy to be honoured at the C & C Cellular/Vodafone Mayo Athletic Awards

Ballina Athletic Club is this year hosting the 2011 C & C Cellular/Vodafone Mayo Athletic Awards which will be held at a gala function in the Downhill Hotel, Ballina on Sunday next February 26. Athletes from all over Mayo will be honoured for their contribution to athletics during the past year. Certificates or awards will be presented to all athletes who won national medals in 2011. Another person to be honoured on the night is Ernie Deacy who will be presented with the Hall of Fame Award for 2011.

Mayo Sailing Club winter series continues

For anyone who wishes to know the rules of the water, Mayo Sailing Club is hosting a lecture entitled The Rules of Racing by Ed Alcock on Thursday February 23 at 7.30pm in the GMIT, Castlebar. It will outline the laws that govern racing on the water. Many boats, big and small, engage in the sport of racing. The Racing Rules of Sailing govern the conduct of yacht racing, dinghy racing, windsurfing, kite surfing, and virtually any other form of racing around a course with more than one vessel while powered by the wind. The forthcoming lecture will cover topics like rights and obligations on the water, giving way, keeping clear, red flags, and protest forms.

March date for the Dubs rematch

On and off again became the theme of Mayo’s National Football League meeting with Dublin over the past week. Saturday night’s match against the All Ireland champions was abandoned by referee Marty Duffy at half time, when a thick blanket of fog descended on McHale Park shortly before the median whistle and showed no signs of clearing after a prolonged half time break, forcing the Sligo whistler to abandon the game.
