Mother of three dies after mountain fall

A Dublin woman died from injuries she sustained after slipping into a ravine while climbing Mweelrea Mountain in south Mayo on Tuesday evening. The woman who was named as Margaret Sweeney (50) from Annaville Park, Dundrum, Dublin, was the mother of three grown up children.

Swinford councillors approve €2 million Parkview development

The four elected members of the Swinford electoral area adopted a report on the €2 million upgrade works for the Parkview Estate in Charlestown at the committee’s first bi-monthly meeting of the new council this week. The Swinford area was the only area in the county to return the same outgoing councillors after last month’s Local Elections.

Seven protesters remanded in custody until today

Five women and four men, with addresses in Ireland, the UK, and France, appeared before a special sitting of Ballina District Court on Monday evening, arising out of public order charges following a Shell to Sea protest at Glengad last Sunday. Seven of the nine were remanded in custody until today (Friday July 3).

Castlebar master chocolatier appointed World Chocolate Ambassador

Castlebar businessman and master chocolatier Dirk Schonkeren, who runs Helena Chocolates, the well known Castlebar café, has just been appointed as a World Chocolate Ambassador by the world’s biggest chocolate company, Barry Callebaut. The prestigious Chocolate Ambassador Club has just 70 members and Dirk is the first chocolatier in Ireland to receive the honour. He will attend a two-day seminar in Belgium and will then be called upon to share his master craft with other chocolatiers from around the globe. Dirk also plans to run some practical introduction to chocolate courses locally in the near future.

Thirty six people in pub after hours

The licensee of the Beaten Path, Brize, Claremorris, was before Castlebar District Court on Wednesday after 36 people were detected on the premises at 1.55am in February this year.

Sergeant Henry Gill told the court that on February 14 he noticed a number of cars were outside the premises and that the lights were on, even though it was past closing hours. The main doors of the bar were closed, however Sgt Gill managed to gain entry to the premises through the emergency exits after someone left through these doors.
