Mayo trad musicians bound for the States

Two young Mayo musicians are preparing to depart to the United States as part of the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann tour of North America this coming October. Éadaoin Ní Mhaicín from Castlebar Comhaltas and Alannah Thornburgh from the Michael Davitt branch of CCÉ in Swinford are among an elite group of traditional musicians who are heading to the United States in late October for a series of concerts in the eastern United States.

Canadian Orpheus Male Choir for Castlebar show

Hosted by the Mayo International Choral Festival, a 50-strong male voice choir from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, will perform on Friday, September 25 with the Mayo Male Voice Choir at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar. This is one of Canada’s leading male voice choirs and have toured extensively, including Canada, Europe, Britain and Ireland and have performed more than 460 concerts in venues such as the Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Major renovations at Mayo Leisure Point this September

From Monday September 21 Mayo Leisure Point will undergo major renovations that will see it closed for approximately three weeks to carry out works. However bowling will cease from Wednesday, September 16. The all new bowling lanes, bowling machines, and reception will be revealed when Mayo Leisure Point reopens fully in mid October.

Fiver Friday returns this weekend Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12 from 7pm to 10pm where bowling is €5 per person. The following weekend there is a reduced price for Laser and Nokey’s Adventureland when you show your same day cinema ticket. One hour in Nokey’s Adventureland is €3 and one game of laser is €3 when you visit Mayo Movie World. Sheridan is ready to take over Ireland again

Tomorrow night Ryan Sheridan will take to the stage at the Sugarbeat festival in Tuam as he heads out on the bye-roads of  Ireland for the first time in five years. We caught up with Sheridan last week ahead of this gig and his appearance in Castlebar in Garbo's on Friday, September 18. Speaking about his time out from the circuit in Ireland, Sheridan said: "It's been five years, it's been a long time away, but I'm dying to get back out there and tour Ireland."

Inaugural festival with French flavour comes to Ballina

Following on from the huge success of the Humbert’s Festival, Ballina Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Jackie Clarke Collection, Ballina Arts Centre, Mayo County Council and MayoNorth.ie, presents French Ballina festival 2015, which highlights Franco-Irish cultural and historical connections, including the 1798 rebellion, through film, theatre, music and the physical transformation of some of Ballina’s streets and venues.

The weekend will commence on Saturday August 22 with a special open-air concert featuring Beyond the Barricade, a musical phenomenon performing show-stopping classics from Les Miserables, Ar Maen Du (The Black Stone), a captivating traditional Breton group, and the concluding act for what is likely to be the musical event of the year in the region, the renowned accordion and fiddle player, Sharon Shannon.

Renowned and inspirational singer Liam Lawton comes to Ballina

Preparations are under way for the widely acclaimed multi-platinum and award winning singer Fr Liam Lawton who is performing in St Patrick’s Church, Ballina, on Friday August 28 at 8.30pm. The Catholic priest, working in the diocese of Kildare & Leighlin south of Dublin, is widely admired in religious and non-religious circles nationally and internationally. Some of his most famous compositions such as ’The Clouds’ Veil’ and ‘The Hiding Place’ are performed at many religious ceremonies throughout the world.
