The Western Hotel, Dalton Street, Claremorris will be buzzing this Christmas with a brilliant line up of entertainment with something to suit everyone's tastes. Next Tuesday, December 22 Lisa Canny will take to the stage. Mayo native Lisa has roots in traditional, folk and soul music, Lisa has been compared to a wide range of artists from Kate Bush and Sinead O’Connor to Ingrid Michaelson and Hozier. A brilliant night is in store.

On Sunday, December 27 the legendary Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfe Tones will hit the stage in the Western Hotel, Derek Warfield is one of the great Irish ballad singers but he’s also much more – a founding member and long-serving front man of the legendary Wolfe Tones, a charismatic all-round performer, a historian, retriever and writer of songs and a man who cares passionately for the Irish song tradition.

Santa brings festive fun to Westport at Spraoi Na Nollag

Westport will be engulfed with the Christmas spirit tomorrow Saturday, December 19 as The Town Hall Theatre becomes the focal point of Spraoi Na Nollag. The Town Hall team in association with Westport Chamber of Commerce will bring the new building to life with the joys of the festive season.

Themed and decorated by the very creative Elsie Higgins the space has been transformed with all the characters of Christmas. Along with the Crib taking centre stage on The Octagon the area will be centre stage for some great free entertainment throughout the day.

It is almost panto time again, but who is Goldilocks?

Rehearsals have stepped up a gear this week in preparation for Castlebar Pantomime’s production of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, with just one month to go to show time. Cast and crew are getting really excited about the upcoming show, which this year is being held in Breaffy Arena from Thursday January 7 to Sunday January 10.

This is a huge move for the pantomime and the sense of the unknown is something that the committee and production team are excited about. “It’s a really big step for us and a bit scary, if we are honest, but it also gives us a chance to try new things and mix it up a little,” said the directors Sharon Lavelle and Antoinette Starken.

Achill singer releases charity single

Achill based singer Graham Sweeney is an innovative and creative young Mayo singer-songwriter who has released a charity single to raise much needed funds for Galway Hospice. The moving song is a tribute to his dear friend Joan Egan, who sadly passed away earlier this year at the Galway Hospice following a battle with Motor Neurone Disease. Graham’s new single “I Am” aims to raise much needed funds and awareness for the Galway Hospice, and all proceeds from this special track will be donated to this worthy foundation. The single is available to download for just 99c on iTunes, Google Play, and a host of other download sites.

Santa’s underground Grotto

Visit Santa’s Grotto in a unique setting, tucked away in his underground Christmas Cave at the Arigna Mining Experience in north Roscommon. Strolling through the winter wonderland, you will also delight in the festive entertainment, which young and old alike will enjoy.

Children can be entertained with seasonal storytelling incorporating a puppet show. This year a magician will be performing original tricks of illusion and sleight of hand to entertain and mystify the Santa visitors of all ages. Face painters will be on hand to give each child a festive makeover; a popular favourite is a certain red-nosed reindeer. Visitors make their way through the magically illuminated cave, to arrive at Santa’s Grotto. Each group of children will meet with Santa and then receive their Christmas gift; Santa’s elves can be seen in their toy workshop preparing toys for Santa.

Paul Durcan at the Linenhall

One of Ireland’s foremost and most prolific poets, Paul Durcan, returns to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar for one of his legendary readings on Thursday December 3 at 8pm. 

Surreal, idiosyncratic, iconoclastic, and full of quirky roguishness, Durcan has carved out a distinctive status that straddles critical acclaim and popularity, a rare achievement in the world of poetry. For this event which takes place on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Durcan has worked with Irish Sign Language interpreter Mairéad Hegarty to develop Irish Sign Language interpretations of selected poems from his most recent collection The Days of Surprise.

A night of classics with St Muredach's Cathedral Choir

Castlebar MDS getting ready for special Fiddler on the Roof performance

Award winning Castlebar Musical and Dramatic Society is currently in full rehearsal swing for its production of Fiddler on The Roof, which will be staged in the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, over three nights from Thursday December 3 to Saturday December 5. Last year the society leaped to success with its production of Oklahoma and received the AIMS Award for Best Actress in a supporting role which was won by Donna Ruane for her unforgettable portrayal of Aunt Eller.
