A two-piece music group from Holland will be making a welcome return to Ireland and playing a few gigs in Mayo this coming Bank Holiday weekend. After a hugely successful visit last year, there is great excitement at the thought of the band belting out the tunes again.

Ghouls and ghosts look set to rise from the grave in Castlebar tomorrow night, October 29, for what is set to be a memorable night of music and fancy dress in the county town. Castlebar’s largest fancy dress party, titled Devil’s Night, will take place at The Garbo’s Venue with live music from four excellent original bands — Overhead, The Albatross, Fangclub, Pranks, and Music For Dead Birds brought to you by Finbar Hoban Presents.
Overhead, The Albatross are a six piece instrumental outfit from Dublin known for their intricate yet powerful melodies and energetic stage presence. Their sound combines a multitude of instruments which go beyond the normal boundaries of "post-rock" and delve into the realm of the cinematic. Layered strings, electronics and spacious synths combined with soaring guitars and powerful drums are used to create their unique sound. OTA's music journeys from delicate intimacy to epic peaks, touching everything in between. Learning To Growl is the debut album, written between Ireland and the Czech Republic, produced and recorded in Clique Recordings, and mixed by Phillip Magee is out now.

Pen-y-Bont Fawr is a small village in north Wales, moulded into the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains between Llanfylin in the south and Bala in the north. Although a small village, it can claim the envied distinction in having produced a thriving male voice choir. Sixty three years ago the embryonic Cor Meibion Penybontfawr choir was formed by a small group of like-minded and enthusiastic individuals. Nurtured by success and support the choir now has more than 40 members.

Overhead, The Albatross has just been announced to headline Castlebar’s largest Halloween fancy dress ball. The ball, called Devil’s Night, takes place on October 29, with a host of upcoming Irish original live bands brought to Castlebar by Finbar Hoban Presents. The annual event has gone from strength to strength over the last eight years and this year will be no different.

The Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar continues its autumn world cinema season with tour-de-force French thriller Dheepan on Tuesday October 11 at 8pm.
From acclaimed director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, Rust and Bone) comes the powerful story of Dheepan, a Sri Lankan Tamil warrior who is forced to flee to France to escape the civil war, posing as a family with a woman and young girl he has never previously met. Finding work as a caretaker of a housing block in the suburbs of Paris, Dheepan works to build a new life and home for his ‘wife’ and ‘daughter’, but the daily violence he confronts quickly reopens the violence from his past, and he is left fighting for their livelihood, and eventually their lives.

Can you imagine what it would feel like to win a Grammy award? Now, imagine having six of them! Matt Molloy, along with The Chieftains have just that – having won Grammy awards for Best Traditional Folk Album, Best World Music Album, Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, Best Traditional Folk Album (twice) and Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Locals, in Westport, are often lucky enough to hear Matt play a few tunes as he joins in the nightly sessions in his busy pub on Bridge Street, but rarely, if ever, get a chance to hear him perform in a concert setting. Matt and The Chieftains have played all over the world, in the largest and most prestigious music venues, and next week, on Thursday, September 29, a limited number of people will be privileged to hear Matt perform live in his own premises, Matt Molloy’s Yard Bar as part of this year’s Westport Arts Festival.
