The big man is back and the date is Friday July 29. Write it in your diaries now. The Royal Theatre welcomes back Big Tom and the Mainliners to the Royal Theatre for a dance on Friday July 29. The man who is known as Ireland’s King of Country Music will take to the stage for a one night only dance, with doors opening at 8.30pm.

The much acclaimed Irish film The Guard starring Brendan Gleeson is being screened on Achill Island as the Cinemobile, Ireland’s travelling cinema, returns to Mayo for its summer visit to the county. Cinemobile is strongly supporting Irish cinema with a host of Irish films screenings this summer with screenings of The Guard, Jig, One Hundred Mornings, and The Runway. Jig is a highly acclaimed documentary on the Irish dancing championships held in Glasgow last year. A must see for all.
One Hundred Mornings directed by Colm Horgan is an Irish feature and a fascinating study of how human nature reacts in extreme situations. Cinemobile will be at the Pier car park in Keel, Achill, today July 22 through to Sunday July 24. Cinemobile is also screening Bridesmaids and Transformers in its Mayo tour. Joe Fury and the Hayride are based on the Galway/Mayo border, renowned for their high energy live performances and unique combination of roots music styles - described by Chez Draper (Austin Producer) as “Red hot rockabilly, country boogie, swampin’ jumpin’ blue-grassy feel at its best“. The feel, grit, and swing in Joe’s voice is backed by the driving line-up of doghouse bass, real pickin' guitar, swinging drums, and that slidin' lap steel, along with some wailin’ harp.
The band are named in tribute to the Louisiana Hayride which was a country music radio show broadcast from Shreveport, Louisiana, that during its heyday from the late forties to the late fifties helped to launch the careers of some of the greatest names in American music including Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash, and Lefty Frizzell. Joe Fury and The Hayride’s new album Hey !Hey! Hey! is now available in all good record stores including The Music Store on the Market Square, Castlebar.
