Borderline is the title of an exhibition of recent paintings by Galway-based artist Mara Sola Lopéz opening at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar next Friday, July 6 at 7.30pm. Borderline is an exhibition that explores the perceptions and emotions connected to experiences of alienation and displacement. Geocultural border-crossings, memories and influences from the tradition of magical realism have inspired the scenarios in Mara’s recent works, in which creatures are relocated into dreamscapes imbued with a sense of loss and an awareness of new unexpected frontiers and pastures. Mara has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Ireland and UK and is represented by KT Contemporary Gallery in Dublin and Mermaid and Monster Gallery in Cardiff, Wales. Her work is in the collections of the VAI and the OPW along with a number of selected private collections. This is Mara’s first major solo show.

The annual summer classical music festival in Bofeenaun church is back for its eighth successive year. On Saturday July 14 and Monday July 17, a group of outstanding classical musicians will again be filling this beautiful church, set against the dramatic backdrop of Nephin Mountain, with a blend of familiar and less familiar pieces, introduced, as always, with their trademark humour and insight. Once again, there is huge demand for tickets, so order yours early!
The performers this year will be led by Iain King (violin), originally from Scotland and now living near Ballina. Iain has played with the Philharmonic Orchestra (first violin) and the English Chamber Orchestra (assistant leader) and has worked on over 600 recordings. Caroline Clemmow (piano), an outstanding soloist and chamber musician with a wide-ranging repertoire, has toured the former Soviet Union and has been particularly involved in resurrecting unjustly forgotten works. Su-a Lee (cello), originally from Korea, trained at the Juilliard and founded the Mr McFall’s Chamber group. Her musical interests range far and wide and she might be persuaded to play the saw!
