Dugort to host an evening of classical treats

A wonderful evening of melodies, classical song and piano solos is promised at St Thomas' Church, Dugort, tomorrow, August 18. Baritone David Durham and pianist Robin Rubenstein combine to offer an enjoyable evening of music under the auspices of the Achill Heinrich Boll Association.

David Durham is already well known to Mayo Male Voice Choir audiences with whom he is a firm favourite. Ms Rubinstein is a celebrated American pianist, writer and teacher, and together they have been performing to acclaim in London with the song cycle ‘The Works of the Painters’. The Achill programme includes works by Scubert, Schuman, Faure, Ravel, Vaughan Williams, and Aaron Copeland.

Busy August of fun, free events at the Museum of Country Life

The Museum of Country Life, Turlough House has a busy line-up of events this month open to the public. On Thursday, August 16 it’s Crafty Thursdays from 2pm to 3pm. This event is open to all from seven years and up and you will learn such skills as straw craft, simple weaving, decoration ceramics and much more. This workshop is on a first come first served basis and no booking is needed. On Friday, August 17 from 11am to 1pm you can join the Lazy Hazy Knitters, this group meets on the first and third Friday of the month, no booking is required. This group is suitable for adults and children from seven years and up. On Saturday, August 18 from 11am to 4pm join the team from ‘The Donkey Sanctuary’, Cork and ‘Sathya Sai’, Sligo for demonstrations of donkey feet trimming. Meet the donkeys and find out about their role. Before the month winds up, as a part of heritage week join Micheál Casey for a talk on the wonders of bird migration and find out why Mayo is such an important stopover point. Time ticking down to James Morrison’s Castlebar appearance

James Morrison, the BRIT Award-winning English singer-songwriter and guitarist, comes to The Royal Theatre on Wednesday, August 22. As the title of James Morrison’s third and by far best album suggests, The Awakening is the sound of an artist coming of age. In his personal life Morrison has become a father, while losing his own father after the latter’s long battle with alcoholism and depression. At the same time, Morrison, 26, has matured as a singer, songwriter, and musician, enabling him to channel all of that emotion into his most accomplished collection of songs yet. “My first two albums felt like practice shots,” he says, “and now I’ve graduated. In many ways this feels like my first proper album.”

Ceol na Locha Festival

The annual Ceol na Locha festival takes place in Tuar Mhic Éadaigh in the Mayo Gaeltacht from August 13 to 17. Classes will take place in the following instruments: button and piano accordion, tin whistle, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bodhrán, concertina, guitar, art, sean-nós dancing. This year, for the first time cooking classes will also take place. Tuition will be through the medium of Irish.
