Good news for playwrights from Claremorris drama festival

As part of their first Fringe Festival Claremorris Drama Festival are looking for 10 new 15-minute plays to be performed on the weekend of Friday March 8 to Monday March 11, 2013. Two plays will be performed each of the four nights (after the main play in the Town Hall,) and there will be two additional performances on the Sunday afternoon. The venue is the Dalton Inn Hotel in the centre of the town.

He will be appearing in the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, on Saturday February 9 at 8pm. Tickets cost €30.

Direct from the Met in HD for your delectation: as part of its spring opera series, the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar presents Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda, live in HD direct from The Met in New York on Saturday, January 19 at 5.55pm. Stunning mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato takes on the virtuosic bel canto role of the doomed Mary Queen of Scots. Director David McVicar turns to the second opera of Donizetti’s Tudor trilogy, which explores regal characters at fateful moments of their lives. Elza van den Heever sings Elizabeth I, and Maurizio Benini conducts.

The Custom House Studios at Westport Quay is currently hosting an exhibition of works by over 42 artists and it will run every day until January 20. Participating artists are from all across Ireland and from overseas. Then opening on January 24 will be an exhibition from Paddy Lamb entitled Memory of Absence. This exhibition will be opened by His Excellency, Loyola Hearn, Ambassador of Canada to Ireland at 7.30pm on Thursday, January 24.

Flora Lucida, a beautiful exhibition of glass sculptures by Mayo artist Emma Bourke, is currently on show at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar. Emma’s artistic practice is inspired by the natural environment in the west of Ireland, and the wild flowers and plants that populate the countryside. Captivated by these enchanting plants, she creates collections of these wild flowers out of glass, eternally capturing their beauty.

Musical talents Philip Lawson and Anna Murray present an exciting evening of contemporary classical music with video accompaniments at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday January 16 at 8pm.
Fractal is a contemporary music production company set up by composer, musician, and writer Anna Murray and Irish classical guitarist Philip Lawson. It aims to create new contexts for contemporary music through informal settings and collaboration with other media. Dedicated to new Irish music, for this concert Fractal has commissioned new works for guitar and electronics from five Irish composers, to be performed as part of their debut tour by Philip Lawson. The pieces run the gamut from exciting rhythmic studies to contemplative musical meditations, each accompanied by a visual realisation of the music by Irish video artists including Maura McDonnell, Eric Grehan, Carsten Krieger, and Jane Cassidy.

Dooega drama group staged their production of Translations in Colaiste Acla on Saturday and Sunday December 29 and 30 and will perform in other venues in coming months.
Translations is a three-act play by Irish playwright Brian Friel, written in 1980. It is set in Baile Beag (Ballybeg), a small village at the heart of 19th century agricultural Ireland. Friel has said that Translations is “a play about language and only about language”, but it deals with a wide range of issues, stretching from language and communication to Irish history and cultural imperialism.
