Tuesdays with Morrie comes to the Royal

For two nights only this heart-warming exploration of friendship and life written by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom comes to the Royal Theatre, Castlebar. This performance will be directed and produced by Breda Cashe, and performed by Terry Byrne as Morrie Schwartz and Andy Murray as Mitch Albom. It will take to the stage in the Royal Theatre on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23 2013 with doors opening at 7pm and the show taking place at 8pm. Tickets cost €20 for adults and €16 with a concession or €12 for a child.

As part of its 20th birthday programme, Catalyst Arts presents Score, an exhibition of innovative contemporary art selected from its membership base. Catalyst Arts is an artist-led gallery in Belfast that has been at the heart of contemporary art in Northern Ireland since 1993. Twenty years on, Catalyst Arts has hosted some 60 directors and 1,000 artists, spanning continents and stages in artistic career. In keeping with the numerical theme, Catalyst presents a group show of sculpture, painting, and more in which none of the works exceeds 20cm in any direction. A diverse, intriguing, and playful show that offers a snapshot of contemporary artistic practice from the island of Ireland. The exhibition continues until Saturday March 30.

Folk-Trad hits Castlebar next Thursday

Five-piece Galway-based folk band Vickers Vimy performs at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday, March 14 at 8pm. Vickers Vimy main men Ed Drea and Fintan Hanley write laid back folk tunes in the style of Paul Simon or Jack Johnson. Inspired by the transatlantic flight of the Vickers Vimy from Newfoundland to Clifden, Connemara in 1919, Ed and Fintan wrote and recorded an album. Produced by Daragh O’Toole and mixed by Ger McDonnell, it features Colm Mac Con Iomaire from The Frames and The Swell Season and a good crew of friends and featuring well-known Davitt College Music teacher and school musical producer Eamonn Mulderrig on drums. Vickers Vimy has supported such greats as John Martyn, The Hothouse Flowers, Mundy, The Guggenheim Grotto and Maria Doyle Kennedy, and released the critically acclaimed debut single, ‘Devil on Your Back’ in 2012. The long-awaited debut album That Vinyl Scratch sees light of day some time this month.

A new type of music night called Origins is about to hit Castlebar. It looks to offer both live music and DJs, with a strong emphasis on live performance, high quality audio and visuals. This music night echoes the next generation of music lover. Origins prides itself on offering an eclectic mix of music, from house to disco, rock to reggae, pop to techno, and everything in between. There is an air of anticipation around the town, with this new music night at the heart of it. The next Origins event is taking place tomorrow, March 2 in The Celtic Clubhouse at 9pm, with a great night of music being promised in the Castlebar area. Following on from the success of Macbeth, the highly acclaimed Icarus Theatre Collective from the UK presents a bold and exciting new production of Shakespeare’s most tragic tale, Romeo and Juliet. This stunning production will come to the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, for two shows on Monday May 6 and Tuesday May 7. The Monday show will take place at 8pm with doors opening at 7pm. Tickets cost from €12.50 to €20. The Tuesday show will take place at 11.30am, with doors opening at 10.30am, for a production that will be ideal for schools and ticketS will also cost from €12.50 to €20.

This year, on St Patrick’s evening, Bank Holiday Sunday, seven proud Mayo men will be putting it all out there to raise money, eyebrows and temperatures.

In association with The Royal Theatre, Mayo Cancer Support Association (Rock Rose House) and The Irish Cancer society, the seven likely lads are aiming to raise €10,000 for these very worthy and important causes. They will give their all to ensure your ticket not only buys you a great night out, but will also help to support these partner charities.
