Ballina Active Age Group will organise a visit to the newly opened Jackie Clarke Collection followed by tea and scones, on May 15. This is a free event, and open to the public. The Field is perhaps John B Keane’s best known play. This powerful play has the Bull McCabe as its central character. The Bull is a tenant farmer with a ferocious temper and an obsession with the field that he rents from a poor widow. After years of back breaking toil, McCabe has transformed the field from a rocky wasteland into a lush green pasture. But when the widow decides to put the property up for auction without considering his work, an outraged Bull is determined he will be the only one to own the field. While no one in the village will dare bid against him, a wealthy English man arrives to Carrickthomond, and outbids the Bull at public auction. The Bull can not stand to see the land he is so passionate about slip away and he decides to deal with the situation, but his actions have disastrous consequences.
