Sound + Vision festival back in Ballina

Sound+Vision, Ballina’s annual film festival, returns this year celebrate music in film once again. Through a week-long programme of film screenings and other events, Sound+Vision this year celebrates the music of Generation X – the 1990s youth culture phenomenon. When American author Douglas Coupland published his debut novel Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture in 1991, he was inadvertently labelling the coming decade’s generation of alienated, disaffected young adults. His book sought to capture an ennui which became something of a zeitgeist for the period. This culture of the Generation X ‘slacker’ found a musical voice in the guise of grunge – a musical hybrid inspired by punk rock, heavy metal and indie rock, and characterised by contrasting song dynamics and apathetic or angst-filled lyrics.

Winner of the coveted Street Performance World Championships, Festival Performer Jack Wise has delighted audiences from as far as Canada to Kathmandu with his hilarious shows! Many Magicians master sleight of hand magic tricks but few develop any real comedic talent. Jack Wise has accomplished both! For over a decade he has entertained sophisticated audiences with his sharp humour and eye popping magic.

Two special Gospel Concerts will take place in Achill. The first concert will be held on Thursday, July 25 at 8.15pm in An Clochán, Keel Community Hall, Achill. The second concert will take place on Friday July 26 at 8.15pm in Achill Sound Hotel. Talented Gospel singer and pianist, Graham Murphy, will be the special guest at both concerts. Graham will play and sing some well-known American southern Gospel Songs. Everyone is welcome. The concert series will then move on to the Erris area and the first will take place on Thursday, August 1 at 8.15pm in Ionad Deirbhile Heritage Centre, Eachléim. The second concert will be on Friday, August 2 at 8.15pm in The Broadhaven Bay Hotel, Belmullet. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. These special evenings will be friendly and informal and are suitable for all members of the family.

Mayo is set to host a new international arts programme following a successful EU bid for €200,000. Mayo County Council arts office’s, public art programme, working with project partners in UK and Spain, has secured the funding from the education, audio-visual and culture executive of the European Commission towards the contemporary visual and digital arts programme Changing Tracks, part of the European Union’s culture programme 2007 to 2013. In total, 476 applications were submitted from across Europe, with 114 selected for funding.

Dog lovers will descend on the royal theatre Castlebar on Sunday, July 21, for the annual pet show, in aid of Mayo SPCA.
Following the success of the last couple of years, the Royal Theatre will again be transformed into a haven for pet lovers of all kinds. Exhibitors include vets, dog trainers, pet stores, big brand pet foods including Connolly’s Red Mills and Brandy, along with craft stands and tasty treats!

The National Museum of Ireland in association with the French Embassy in Ireland is delighted to present this exhibition which was originally produced by Musée de l’Armée, Paris (the Army Museum, Paris). The exhibition was first seen in the National Museum, Dublin, as part of Ireland’s EU Cultural Programme 2013. It has been enhanced by additional material not previously seen in the Dublin exhibition. A highlight of the exhibition will be the display of The Ramillies Flag which is on loan from Kylemore Abbey. This flag was captured at the Battle of Ramillies (in Belgium) in 1709 by Lord Clare’s Irish Brigade.
This exhibition in the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar, shows Irish and French military co-operation since the 17th century. From the Wild Geese to World War I to Samuel Beckett’s time in the French resistance, to the close Irish-French military links today, the exhibition retraces the history of the close relations between Ireland and France. The exhibition will run until September 29.

Running during the Ballina Salmon Festival is the a new exhibition, but Ballina Print Makers in association with Ballina Arts Centre and Ballina Salmon Festival called 20 Shades of Print. The exhibition is being held in a pop-up gallery in the premises formally known as Zebra Hair and Nail Bar, O’Rahilly Street in Ballina. Get yourself down there between 10am and 6pm, before the festival ends this weekend when it closes on Sunday, July 14.
