•Knocknacarra FC pre-season training commenced this week for all adult (junior) teams on Tuesday and also today (Thursday) in Cappagh Park at 7pm. The club hopes to enter three adult teams in the Galway & District League for the forthcoming season. Registration for all underage teams takes place at the clubhouse in Cappagh park tomorrow (Friday) from 7pm to 9pm and Saturday from 1pm to 3pm . Most young athletes who want to improve their form tend to concentrate on one particular sport but up-and-coming Westport star Con Doherty prefers to work on the three disciplines of running, cycling, and swimming in his bid to become a professional triathlete. Having effortlessly come first in the swimming section of the inaugural Westport triathlon recently, and featuring as a winner in the first round of the Irish National League in cycling in March, he is already well on his way to achieving his dream.

Kilkenny’s landmark castle and its stunning grounds are set to be a hub of summer activity this month with a varied range of events due to take place.

Ryan is closely followed by three times league winner John Byrne (Mayo AC) and the ever improving TJ McHugh in third place. In the women’s event twice winner and last year’s runner up Mary Gleeson lies in second place with 2003 winner Angela O’Connor in third. The focus will now turn to league race number two, the Decare Claremorris five mile on Saturday evening June 26 at 6pm.

The first ever Westport triathlon took place on Saturday May 29 last when more than 60 participants took to the sea, swimming from the Quay up to the Point before cycling a 20k round trip to Croagh Patrick and finishing up with a 10k run up and down the Railway Walk.

A number of Mayo AC athletes competed in 26.2 degree of heat last weekend in the Burren Marathon challenge. Organised by Ballyvaughan-Fanore walking club this is the third year this event has been in existence and is growing steadily in numbers with over 1,600 participants this year. The event encompasses a 10k, a half marathon and the great challenge itself the full 26.2 mile marathon.
