The campaign between Joe Biden and Donald Trump gets into full swing this week. By the time this column is printed, there will have been the first debate, which is on Tuesday night or should I say Wednesday morning at 2am, between the two candidates: Biden for the Democrats and Trump for the Republican Party. I would love to see the debate as it happens, but I know I would fall asleep.

So, there was Storm Ellen five days ago. As I am writing this, we are living through Storm Francis.

Now I know we’ve had two major plans, one the July Stimulus Package, but the plan I want to focus on today in this column is the plan for Education and the Roadmap to get it.

Well what a wonderful weekend we’ve had, and I hope all of you enjoyed it.

I hope each of you in some way or another is enjoying this lovely weather. We are so lucky to live on an island, when we look at mainland Europe where the temperatures have soared to an almost unbearable level and there are deaths and forest fires and all such attendant ills from the very high temperatures there. Here, we are enjoying the dry, hot weather, which is just at those temperatures which are bearable but lovely, and I hope it is a foretaste of all of the summer to come.

I’m going to begin this column with really interesting creative and exciting news. Last Friday night I was invited to launch a book called Tales from the Heart – New Creative Writing from Athlone Institute of Technology. Now, this is a compilation by Mick Donnellan of nineteen writers who attended his creative writing course for the last number of months. The course is conducted under the aegis of the Department of Lifelong Learning in Athlone IT.

As I am compiling this weekly column for the Advertiser, people in the US are voting in the mid-term elections for both the House of Representatives and the Senate. So by the time my column appears the results will be fully out. I hope that the polls which are forecasting Democratic wins in the House of Representatives are correct, but of course our belief in polls has run low. President Trump has put a huge effort into shoring up the Republican seats in both the Congress and the Senate, and he has campaigned tirelessly for the last 10 days hoping to consolidate the Republican vote. It seems that the US is viewing these mid-term elections as a referendum on President Trump and his handling of the US. So it will be very intriguing to see the results and to see whether the Democrats will come back in charge of the House of Representatives.
