FOR THOSE of us blessed with kids, or who can borrow kids, a highlight of the year is the Baboró International Arts Festival for Children. So it was with great delight that your trusty correspondent attended the Monday evening launch for this year’s festival where details of the 2015 programme were unveiled.

Perhaps only Ladies Day at the races causes a similar frenzy to all the upset and commotion that heralds ‘Back to School’ at the end of August or beginning of September. It is the biggest event in the social year. After the long summer holiday children are in a daze as their parents lead them, often dressed in new clothes top to toe, forward into the yard. Among the attractions of the upcoming Clifden Arts Festival is the launch of the latest poetry collection by Moya Cannon, entitled Keats Lives and published by Carcanet Press. It is also something of a homecoming, as Moya was a long longtime stalwart of Galway’s literary scene.

The new Educate Together School in Castlebar, which is due to open on Tuesday September 1, will hopefully still open despite not having a home sorted out just 12 days before it's due to open, according to the group's regional development officer. The new Educate Together school for the town was announced in February of this year and would be the county's second such school after the opening of one in Ballina last year. The school had been given the old Burren National School outside the town as a home, but the building was deemed not up to the required standard by the Educate Together.

The first Over The Edge Open Reading after the summer break takes place in Galway City Library on Thursday August 27, from 6.30pm to 8.00pm. The featured readers are Jessica Traynor, Matt Flesk, and Aoife Reilly. 

Peter Greene was born in Galway city in 1895, the youngest child of Colman Greene from Carna and Julia McGrath from Newcastle. He was educated in the ‘Pres’ and the ‘Mon’, where his teacher Brother Ambrose was a major influence; “Boys, I hope none of you will ever wear the red coat.”
