Ten of the 11 candidates seeking a nomination to stand for the presidential election, will be in Galway tomorrow to address a special meeting of the Galway City Council, which takes place in City Hall at 2pm.

As the Dáil heads off on its summer holidays there is much to contemplate after a busy and interesting first half to 2018, with the promise of more tumult to come in the autumn.

The recent opinion polls, if they are to be believed, have broadly backed Insider’s contention, made last week that, contrary to perceived wisdom, the Galway constituencies may be far from predictable next time out. Even those who see little scope for changes however agree the Roscommon/Galway constituency is an exception.

Insider is still recovering from what was a dramatic end to 2017 - the State narrowly avoiding a Christmas election; Ireland being at the centre of the standoff at the end of Phase 1 of the Brexit negotiations; and locally a SF implosion in Galway West. It was a whirlwind few weeks, and a period that offered wildly contrasting fortunes for the main political players. The Christmas break was badly needed by all.

Well, Catalonia is bubbling away, and increasingly looking serious. I had thought that somebody would intervene and bring the two sides together where there could be meaningful debate, but somehow that has never happened and I fear now that Spain is going to move in with its heavy-handed diplomacy again and the result will be even more chaos.
