One of our great national traits is the knowledge that we could all do the other fellow’s job so much better, be it politicians, teachers, referees, whatever, we all know better. Some of us keep this to ourselves but others have no difficulty letting the whole world know.

The late PJ Morley (81) was laid to rest in Knock cemetery on Wednesday afternoon last after his funeral mass. Mr Morley served as a Fianna Fáil TD for 20 years from 1977 to 1997 for the Mayo East constituency and was one of the driving forces in securing Government backing for the construction of Knock Airport in the 1980s. He died at Mayo General Hospital last Sunday following a short illness and is survived by his immediate family, wife Mary, sons Enda, Patrick, and Brian and daughter Cathy; his sisters Mary, Rene, and Bridget.

A Galway politician who hit the headlines recently over what she terms an “unfortunate series of events” spoke out this week in a bid to explain the “tsunami” of occurrences which have resulted in largely negative press for her.

Every town needs its storytellers, its raconteurs who can fill a silence with a story plucked from the ether, who can use the power of words to shape situations, to create pictures in minds, to instil the emotions of laughter and to lift the tastebuds of imaginations. On Tuesday night, Galway lost one of its best exponents of this art when John Cunningham passed away.

However as quick as you could say travel expenses, McLoughlin replied: “You have no mandate to implement a household tax, nor to rob the poor to help the rich. If you had any principles you would resign from the Labour Party!”

At the October meeting of Stirling Council a motion was passed declaring a cultural agreement between Galway and Stirling. The motion an exact replica of a motion proposed by Labour Councillor Billy Cameron at the June meeting of Galway City Council, is not a twinning arrangement but focuses on the exchange of ideas, cultural heritage, social, recreational, educational, sporting and other activities between both communities.
