SHEILAH MORRIS (now Cangley) was born in Livingstone, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in 1928. Her father, who was born in Galway, had been recruited in London in 1920 to join the Veterinary Department of the Civil Service in Northern Rhodesia. He married a Galway girl, and they both moved to Mazabuka, where he worked at a veterinary research station. Now in her eighties and living in Australia, Sheilah recalls her childhood memories of Galway in the 1930s.

It's Lights! Camera! Action! in Bonniconlon as the Dramatic Society prepares to take to the stage with Wigs on the Green from tonight to Sunday. The curtain in the Grove Hall is up at 8.30pm nightly as the clock is turned back to the 1950s and the story of widow Betty Smith (Margaret Devine) and her daughters Kitty (Laura McShane) and Maureen (Deirdre Doherty) – two young ladies desperate for romance, excitement and fun. If they are to secure such wanton happiness, they need to succeed in rubber-stamping their mother’s blessing to go the dance.

In a packed Oranmore Church last week, Dr. Eamon Martin, the Archbishop of Armagh, consecrated a new 500kg bell which will ring loud accross the parish for the first time on Christmas Eve.

We are one month out from Christmas, to the day, and I would like to mark it by wishing you and yours a happy Black Friday. The retailers’ fabricated start to the Christmas shopping season has already caught on in little old Ireland. The run up to Christmas no longer begins on the Church’s specified day, but instead is determined by frenzied shoppers, wound up by delighted retailers. Of course, the upside is that shoppers bag bargains, businesses take on extra employees, and extra income is regenerated as a result of the additional footfall.

This photograph was published on March 13 1959 by Alexander ‘Monkey’ Morgan (1919-1958), a wartime pilot for the Royal Artillery Air Corps, who launched a peacetime career in aerial photography before his tragic death in a plane crash. It is a detail from one of the images he took for the Irish Independent between 1951 and 1958. Some 200 of these have now been published in book form under the title Ireland from the Air. The book is a crystal ball into the past. The images are of such high quality that the detail just leaps out. Our image today is just a section of one of the photographs which we have enlarged.

The tight-knit community of Irishtown was stunned and saddened this week by the discovery of the bodies of a well known local couple Kitty Fitzgerald and her husband Tom at their home in Knockadoon, about 1km from Irishtown village close to the Galway border. Their bodies were found on Tuesday afternoon shortly after 3pm, with Kitty's body found inside the house and Tom's body outside the home. Their son, who was also at the scene, was brought to University College Hospital Galway before being transferred to the Beaumont Hospital in Dublin for treatment to serious injuries.
