The re-fixture for last Sunday’s abandoned county hurling semi-final between Clarinbridge and Craughwell takes place this Saturday in Duggan Park at 2.30pm.

There is a gush of expectation and excitement in Galway football circles this week in anticipation of a first county final between Tuam Stars and Corofin for 16 years.

The finalists for the 2011 county senior hurling final are expected to be known by 5pm this Sunday afternoon, barring any draws.

Tuam Stars and their supporters will be in high spirits this week after their tremendous and deserved one-point victory over Mountbellew/Moylough on Sunday.

Corofin have been the most consistent club side at senior level in Galway football for the past 20 years. They have won the Frank Fox Cup on 10 occasions since 1991 and they will be hoping to continue that rich winning vein when they play Salthill, Mountbellew/Moylough or Tuam Stars in the 2011 final. Despite the backlog of games, the final is still pencilled in for October 23.

Tuam Stars and Mountbellew/Moylough renew acquaintances again this Sunday in Tuam Stadium (3.30pm) for the replay of the county quarter-final after they drew 2-4 to 0-10 last weekend.

I arrived early at GAA HQ last Sunday as I like to soak up the pre match atmosphere of All-Ireland final day. Normally there is a great buzz in and around Croke Park from about 10am and last Sunday was no different. I was privileged to have been asked to do co-commentary for the minor game and match analysis on the big one, so I had to be in the grounds by 12.45. As it happened, I also received an invitation from the GPA to attend a pre-match reception in Jurys Croke Park at 12 noon. It was a gig for former inter-county footballers and was an excellent idea as the opportunities to meet and chat with former players from other counties are few and far between. In fact during our playing years we would barely look at each other never mind hang about for a chat after matches. So unless you participate in some of the GAA golf classics, you rarely get a chance to say hello. And I don’t play golf! My friend Pat Holmes had arrived at the reception before I got there and, unfortunately for me, had devoured most of the sandwiches. Notwithstanding that minor complaint, the 30 minutes I spent at the pre match event was pleasant. I chatted with Greg Blaney, the former Down centre-forward, and John Lynch, corner back with Tyrone in the eighties. I asked both for their pre match predictions. Neither of them could see anything other than a Kerry victory. And that was the general consensus in and around Croke Park prior to the match, with the exception of the Dublin folk of course.

Following the exciting 1-11 to 2-8 drawn game last weekend in the county football championship between Cortoon-Shamrocks and Mountbellew/Moylough, the county board will be hoping for a big crowd at the replay which takes place this Sunday in Tuam Stadium (4.15pm).

The replay of the county football quarter-final between Claregalway and Corofin took place on Saturday evening in Tuam Stadium with last year’s beaten finalists Corofin advancing on a 1-15 to 1-10 score-line.

After the bitter disappointment of last year’s two-point defeat to Wexford in the All-Ireland final there is a strong belief this year’s Galway camogie panel can collect the senior title on Sunday in Croke Park (4pm) when they face Wexford again.
