No walk in the Garden expected as Westmeath take on Micko’s men
The long wait is over. Championship football is upon us. After a dismal league campaign, Tomas O’Flatharta’s men will be hoping to give their faithful supporters something to cheer about come Sunday evening. O’Connor Park Tullamore, a happy hunting ground for Westmeath over the past decade, is the venue for the Leinster quarter-final clash with Wicklow with a 2pm throw-in.
Cortoon and St Michael’s crash out of the championship
Joining them in the early shower department are Killanin, Kilkerrin/Clonberne, and NUIG.
Galway must improve enormously to beat Mayo
I was in McHale Park to see Mayo disembowel Roscommon at their ease and I was in Markievicz Park to see Galway stumble luckily to a narrow 1-13 to 0-12 victory over Sligo. Based on the respective performances from both panels and managements, there will only be one result in Pearse Stadium in just over two weeks’ time. And that is a Mayo victory.
Mayo will not be fearful of Galway in Connacht final
Sometimes there can be no hiding from hard facts. And here are two: Firstly, the Galway senior football team have not won an All-Ireland quarter final since 2001. Secondly, they have not won a single game in Croke Park in the past eight years and on the clear evidence provided last Sunday against Sligo, even if they did beat Mayo in two weeks time, which is a big if, that statistic is unlikely to change.

Carey - GPA should take 1.05 million euro package from government
Nine-time All-star winner and ex-Gaelic Players Association President DJ Carey believes that the GPA would be silly to ignore the €1.05 million euro on the table for a new government grants scheme, despite the ‘package’ being reduced by almost €2 million because of the current economic climate.
King Henry the Ninth?
Kilkenny hurling legend Henry Shefflin will this year bid to join an elite band of just two players at the top of the leader-board for GAA All Stars, after being nominated yesterday for his ninth award.
Moran gets the nod for Royal clash
There was only one real surprise when John O'Mahony announced his starting line up for this Sunday's clash with Meath in the All-Ireland quarter-final in Croke Park. Castlebar's Barry Moran, who was expected to miss the game with a broken bone in his hand, was named at full forward. Moran, who picked up the injury in training last week, was expected to be sidelined by the hand problem for a number of weeks. But in a similar turn of events to what happened when Ronan McGarrity suffered a facial injury in a club championship match in the lead up to the Connacht final, he seems to have healed quickly enough to be given the nod.
