A Mayo county councillor has stepped down from the HSE regional west forum in protest against the removal of breast cancer surgical and diagnostic services from Mayo General Hospital. Fine Gael Councillor Patsy O’Brien, the man who topped the poll in the Claremorris electoral area and received the highest number of votes of all candidates in Mayo in the June local elections, has not sought to be re-appointed to the health forum, having served on it since its inception. The impending refusal of planning permission for a development at Cloonkeen, Islandeady, caused frustration to elected members of the Castlebar electoral area committee this week. The single dwelling house was turned down because it was located on a national primary route, and the NRA objected to it. Cllr Johnny Mee asked senior executive planner for Mayo County Council John McMyler if there was anything that could be done in relation to this plan. Mr McMyler responded it was not likely as the council had received a submission from the NRA on the application.

Sinn Féin County Councillor Gerry Murray has condemned the introduction of the pension levy which he claims puts the burden of Ireland’s public finances on low and medium income public workers and lets the oil and gas companies off the hook once again. He described the Government’s spin doctors as shameful in their “pathetic attempt to portray and blame public sector workers as being exclusively responsible for the current economic downturn”. Cllr Murray challenged Fianna Fáil on the fairness of the public service pension levy noting that the “sliding scale in the levy discriminates against the lower paid while the oil and gas multi-nationals go untouched.”
