An all-star American team of boxers will take on Irish champions in a top-class international amateur boxing contest between twin cities Galway and Chicago on Sunday July 12.

Preparations are well under way for the Westport Festival of Sport fun day, which is to be held in conjunction with the Gaelforce adventure race weekend Sunday August 23 on the South Mall, Westport. The event, co-ordinated by the Mayo Sports Partnership, promises to be full of fun activities such as the family sports challenge (incorporating 12 different sports), water sports, demonstrations, bouncy castle/fun inflatables, walking challenges, street orienteering, inclusive games, and the fourth annual Mayo Team Challenge.

Big time international boxing comes back to Mayo next month with the holding of two international competitions which will pit Ireland against England on December 9 in the Castlecourt Hotel, Westport, and December 10 in the Ramada Hotel, Ballina. The international contests are being jointly hosted by St Anne’s Boxing Club, Westport, and the Ardnaree Boxing Club.

Ardnaree boxing club has become an institution in pugilistic circles in Mayo and across the country from humble beginnings in 1949 when 40 young boxers took up the sport for the first time. The club has gone on to write a very long and proud history, claiming 26 national titles, more than 300 Connacht titles and 500 Mayo titles, and producing eight internationals through the more than 1,600 young boxers who have donned gloves in competition for the club. Ardnaree has also had the honour of being the first club in the country to train female boxers back in 1996 when they had 30 girls enter their gym and club secretary Fiona Hennigan became the first female judge in Ireland to pass the European and World exams. She has gone on to represent Ireland at European and world championships. The club has captured national titles in every decade since it was formed the first in 1955 when Noel Coggins became the first man to bring a national title west of the Shannon. This feat was followed right up to this decade when Gerry Casey (twice), Gary Geraghty, and Alex Corduff all brought national titles back to the club.

The Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing club will promote its next full contact kickboxing event in the Black Box Theatre on Saturday, December 5, entitled "Seasons Beatings 2".

Buccaneers face AIB Cup holders Ballynahinch for the first time at home in Dubarry Park, Athlone, on December 5, when the sides clash in a crunch AIB League division 1B encounter kicking off at 2.30pm.
